Cons

It crashes as soon as I try to use it. Version 3.3 works fine, but more recent versions do not function. I thought I would give it another try after several years of sticking to 3.3, in the hope they might have fixed it, but no, it still just crashes. I am running Windows 7 64 Bit. If 3.3 runs, then so should 4.1, but it does not. I have my O/S on the C:\ Drive, my programs on D:\, and my files on E:\ rather than everything on C:\ but that should not make a difference.

Old school user interface.

Summary

The cons say it all. When Microsoft first came out with the ribbon at the top of their office suite, I wasn't a fan. However, as time went on and I got used to it, I saw the advantages and ease of use and changed my mind. OpenOffice is an excellent and very powerful office suite that will serve anyone well but their user interface has not been updated in years and it shows. As far as abilities go, I would throw OpenOffice up against ANY office suite out there. I just wish they'd come up with a more modern interface as what they have is comparable to Office XP at best. Once you get used to it though, there isn't much you can't do with it. It functions much like Office does so the learning curve has more to do with learning where things are than learning a whole new system. A small price to pay considering it's free. Also, OpenOffice is fully compatible with all MS extensions and will save in MS formats so there is full interchangeability with Office so there's no loss of productivity when bringing your docs to someone using Office. Really, you can't go wrong here, especially if you don't feel like paying a monthly fee to Microsoft just to use a product you've already paid for.

Pros

Although most of the time I still use Microsoft's office software to edit Word, Excel documents, but in our company, many people do not need to edit these Word Excel documents, they only need to read them, so if in their computer only installed Apache OpenOffice, it will greatly reduce the cost of office. And it can also be used on multiple platforms.

Cons

It is better if it integrate simple image editing functions.

Summary

I sincerely recommend this software.

* Was a great piece of software in its time

Cons

* In 2011, after Oracle bought Sun, most of the OpenOffice developers jump ship and started LibreOffice.

Summary

Used to be a great office suite, but after 5 years of neglect its best to follow the developers to LibreOffice.

It's free and does the job.
Allows me to connect WordWeb thesaurus

Cons

Sometimes it takes 8-10 seconds to open up

Summary

One of the few apps out there that let's you attach a thesaurus to it. I recommend using WordWeb. Works great.

Too many bugs in Windows 8.1.

Summary

Too many bugs in Windows 8.1. I pasted a document from MS Word and only the header would print.

Then when I tried to close OpenOffice, it would not close. It's the first time I've ever seen a program do that. I looked it up and lots of others have had the same problem.

Forget it, I'm going to try LibreOffice, hopefully they have fixed this bug.

Pros

This free office suite has six powerful applications that are just as good as Microsoft's, but the suite is 100 percent free. I enjoy writing letters, memorandums, and APA research paper; therefore, I find the word processing program to be exactly what I need. Apache Impress is similar to PowerPoint, and the presentation application works quite well and very nice animations, transitions, etc. Apache OpenOffice Calc is similar to Microsoft Excel and I enjoy using the functions in calc.

Cons

I cannot think of any.

Summary

If you are looking for an Office Suite that has most of the features like Microsoft Office, but is one-hundred percent free, then choose Apache OpenOffice. You will not be disappointed.

It gets slow and cranky with very large documents

Summary

I've been using the program for years now, ever since I switched to a Mac. Originally I was running Microsoft Office under Windows (dual operating systemThe switch from set-up). After a few months, I realized that OpenOffice let me do everything that Office did - including reading and saving documents in Office and PDF format. I have not used it for anything but word processing, but it does a great job on that.

Free.

But you get what you pay for - and after a month of constant crashes (4.1.2),
I'd prefer a sharp stick in the eye. Seriously.

Cons

After 30 years of computing (first PC was a one piece Eagle IBM clone), I have finally found the most unstable program ever written for PC. I was trying to update my order sheet so I could put my order in - while the salesman waited - he kept laughing because the program crashed 4 times in a half hour.

My main concern is that I can't use Excel to import the file - nor can I use Open Office to save the file in Excel's format - it crashes every time.

Totally useless for a 475 kb 9 page workbook.

Has it always been like this?

Summary

I have been using this office suite for over 7 years. I had a new desktop pc 4 or 5 months ago, I had microsoft office on my new pc.I deleted it and downloaded open office.I am very happy with it.Its easy to use and a nice interface.I love it.
